3 reasons look and feel matters in your LMS design

The words ‘look and feel’ are thrown around a lot when it comes to visual design. Put simply, they refer to the visual elements of the user experience - and even though some people think of it as just being a matter of choosing a font, a few colours and a stock image or two, there’s actually much more to it than that. If you’re not getting the engagement rates you’re hoping for, it could be time to consider the look and feel of your LMS and what impact that might have.

1. It can massively affect usability

A cluttered page will just distract any learner from the content they actually need. Having too many visual elements vying for a user’s attention will only be detrimental, so a clean, clear design is extremely important.

What seems like a minor decision to you can also have a major impact on engagement and the way people engage with the LMS. For instance, a grey button may imply that content is not available - something as simple as changing it to a bright, eye-catching colour can help boost learner engagement and guide the user towards the content that matters most.

2. First impressions count

Did you know that it only takes 0.05 seconds for a user to form an opinion about your site? If your LMS analytics are showing high bounce rates (Google Analytics also provides this data), could your design have something to do with it? An outdated, busy, garish or boring design might put potential users off, and they might go elsewhere to find the information they need.

In fact, many users value visual appeal more highly than usability, so it goes to show that the design of your LMS is hugely important. It only takes 2.6 seconds for a user’s eyes to land on the design element that most influences their opinion of a site, so ensure that your login or landing page draws the user in immediately and tells them exactly what you want them to do.

3. It cements your brand

You might think that if your audience is internal, representing your brand doesn’t matter. But it can actually help create a sense of cohesion, build trust and promote a more seamless digital experience for your employees. And when your LMS will be accessed by external people or the general public, strong branding is even more important, as it will make your platform immediately recognisable as part of your brand.

Brand recognition is an important deciding factor for many of the people who will be using your LMS, and it could spell the difference between them accessing your resources as a trusted source or going elsewhere. This is also your chance to convey more about your brand - do you want to come across as edgy? Corporate? Creative? Friendly?
